Our Philosophy
IIC is built upon the proven conviction that attractive financial returns are atainable while simultainiously investing capital in ways that positivly impact the planet and society.
Mark Campanale
Mark’s expertise is in the nexus between nature, ecosystems, energy/climate and financial markets.
This is as an analyst, writer/presenter and as an expert advisor. His particular interests are in assisting fund managers with their investment strategies; or looking to scale their propositions by accessing global financial markets. With over thirty five years focusing on sustainable investing, the last fifteen of these in private markets, Mark has an extensive range of professional relationships as an independent advisor to funds or wealth managers, as well as with investors allocating capital in the impact investing marketplace.
From 1989 to 2008, Mark was a co-founder of some of the first responsible investment funds in London firstly at Jupiter Asset Management, then at NPI Asset Management, AMP Capital (in Australia), and Henderson Global Investors (now known as Janus Henderson). This includes the Jupiter Ecology Fund and the AMP Sustainable Future Funds.
Mark has served on the World Business Council for Sustainable Development working group on capital markets leading up to the 1992 Earth Summit; was a Member of the Steering Committee of UNEP Financial Sector Initiative (1999-2003); founder of the UK Sustainable and Responsible Investment Forum (UKSIF), 1990-2006; and is now on the Advisory Board of GFANZ, the Glasgow Finance Alliance for Net Zero.
In addition, Mark is a member of the advisory council of the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation’s Conservation & Markets Initiative; the Impact & ESG advisory board of Glenmede Wealth Management; a Fellow of Tribe Impact Capital; an advisor to Amazonia Impact Ventures and also to Sahara Impact Ventures. He is a Visiting Lecturer at the Imperial College Master’s course on sustainable finance; and Oxford’s Said Business School’s sustainable finance course. Mark serves on the Overview Effect Board of Confluence Philanthropy, a network of impact investors and family offices based in the USA; and its ‘Climate Change Collaborative’ project.
In 2021, Mark was winner of the CEREs/Trillium Capital ‘Lifetime Achievement Award on Sustainable Finance’. He was made both an Ashoka Fellow and Sorenson Impact Fellow in 2022.
Mark is the CEO of the Carbon Tracker Initiative, a non-profit think tank best known for its work on ‘stranded assets’, the ‘carbon bubble’ and mapping the impact of the clean energy revolution on the fossil fuel energy system. This analysis is used by investors in fossil fuels and financial supervisors in how to divest, or set decarbonisation pathways; and with policy makers interested in regulatory frameworks that smooth the energy transition. In 2017, Mark founded Planet Tracker, which is focused on nature and biodiversity, also through the lens of financial markets. Together, Planet Tracker and Carbon Tracker employ a team of 40+ writers and analysts based in London.
For regulated activities (principally covering financial introductions and advice), Mark acts through Consilium Capital, an FCA-regulated firm.
Mark is a trustee at the Ashden Foundation, a UK-based charity supporting and promoting climate change solutions, with a focus on opportunities which deliver social benefits.
